:: 𝐔𝐒𝐍𝐄𝐀 :: 🌿💚🌿 Technically Usnea isn’t a plant, rather it’s a combination of algae and fungus that have a symbiotic relationship. More specifically, “lichens are by definition symbiotic organisms composed of a fungal partner, the mycobiont, and one or more photosynthetic partners, the photobiont, that may be either a green algae or cyanobacterium.” The fungus has the ability to keep the algae safe and dry with its structures whereas the algae are able to photosynthesize and provide nourishment.

Usnea is a Fruticose lichen, referring to the lichen that branches out, that can often be found growing on Birch, conifer, and other hardwood deciduous trees such as oak and fruit trees found in the Northern Hemisphere and also in Asia and Europe.

Usnea has an incredible range of actions that include antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antitumor, antiprotozoal... the list goes on. The large variety of pathogens that Usnea treats makes it a surprisingly versatile remedy that has been used in different ways throughout the world.

By studying the medicinal herbs that grow around you, you can develop a deeper relationship with the plants in your local environment. 🌍🌿💚

After growing or identifying local plants, harvest, taste, and make medicine with them. When you experience the effects of an herb firsthand, the memory stays in your heart compared to memorizing hundreds of textbook facts. 📚

Once your herbal medicine is ready, experiment by taking different dosages. Start with drop doses and increase over time to note its effects. By noticing how herbs make you feel in your body, you can deepen your comprehension of how they might impact others.

Remember to always practice safely by researching the safe dosage of an herb before administration since some plants are drop-dose only, like Poke, while others can be taken freely, like Nettles.

By combining your textbook studies with sensory experiences, you can develop a well-rounded understanding of herbal medicine and strengthen your skillset as a holistic herbalist.

Note I say you can develop 𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 of your herbal medicines, not just intellectual knowledge. ✨

Plants are always communicating with us, and while they don’t speak the same language as us, you can learn how to hear their messages and incorporate their wisdom into your practice to use the whole plant for the whole person and experience true healing that extends into your body, spirit, and soul.💚

St. John’s Wort, often called "sunshine in a bot

St. John’s Wort, often called "sunshine in a bottle" ✨☀️✨, is one of my favorite nerve trophorestoratives. This means it helps restore and tone the nervous system, particularly when it’s been weakened by long periods of stress, nervousness, tension, anxiety, or insomnia.

Unfortunately, this plant is a prime example of how the supplement industry often oversimplifies the use of medicinal herbs. Most people think of St. John’s Wort only as a remedy for depression and stop there, overlooking its wide array of medicinal properties, actions, and uses far beyond the scope of depression.

It also opens the door to a deeper conversation about holistic herbalism. Why? Because handing someone with severe depression a bottle of St. John’s Wort and expecting a miracle cure oversimplifies both the condition and the remedy. True healing requires addressing the root causes, which, in the case of depression, are often multifaceted.

That said, St. John’s Wort IS still suitable for mild depression or melancholy, especially during the winter months when feelings of isolation, loneliness, and disconnection are more common.

In my experience, those who respond well with this plant often feel a disconnect not only from the world around them but also from their inner true self. They may feel as though they’ve lost touch with their purpose or spiritual nature. ✨

St. John’s wort is a remedy that needs a little patience, so if you're feeling the blues – don’t expect to feel positive and upbeat after a day or two (maybe for some folks) but allow a few weeks for this gem to take action.

U S N E A | Old Man’s Beard 🧙🏼‍♂️
Here in the Pacific Northwest there’s a mystical lichen that grows long and wispy tendrils from the branches of trees called Usnea spp, also known as Old Man’s Beard as it grows like a body of flowing hair.

This lichen only likes to grow in areas of clean pollution free air, which unfortunately means the regions with conditions for Usnea to thrive are diminishing these days. If you see it growing in abundance, it is a reassuring sign you’re in an area with more air purity than most.

Usnea can take years to grow into a significant size for use, so we only harvest it from the ground when it’s been blown off of the branches after a storm.

It’s a powerful medicine and has an incredible range of actions that includes antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antitumor, antiprotozoal... the list goes on. And the large variety of pathogens that Usnea treats makes it a surprisingly versatile remedy that has been used in different ways throughout the world.

Usnea has been used for clearing toxic heat and removing external lung wind-heat (basically respiratory infections). This makes Usnea a “broad-spectrum anti-infective”. Some of the toxic heat issues might look like fevers, infections, boils, and both bacterial and fungal infections.

When it comes to fungus, Usnea can be quite the remedy. It has been shown to work against Candida, athlete’s foot, jock itch, ringworm, and various vaginal infections such as yeast infections.

Due to its strong affinity for the respiratory system, it’s also a remedy I would strongly consider for people that have lived in houses infected with black mold, which is a very common occurrence here in the PNW as it’s soooo damp all the time!

:: D E M U L C E N T S :: 🌿💧✨ I think that this simple herbal action is one of the most important and overlooked actions in western herbalism.

Demulcents are herbs that increase the moisture content of tissues, especially mucosal membranes. Derived from the Latin verb "demulcere," meaning to soothe or caress, demulcents offer a gentle, cooling, and hydrating action, that balances dryness and atrophy in the tissues.

When considering the pattern of dryness, it’s important to consider the importance of fluids in the body. Fluids in the body not only lubricate tissues but also transport nutrients, metabolic waste, and substances. Constitutional dryness can hinder nutrient absorption, detoxification, leading to tissue deterioration and potential accumulation of waste.

While it’s common to think of the body's moisture content as being solely achieved through water, we must remember that the other primary fluid that nourishes us is oils. It’s certainly common for many folks in the modern world to be water dehydrated, but most are also oil dehydrated too.

Did you know taste can reveal an herb’s affinity—helping you predict its effects? Affinity shows where an herb works in the body: lungs, kidneys, digestion, or nerves. For example, bitters target the liver & gallbladder, expectorants focus on the lungs, and carminatives soothe digestion. 🌿

Affinity tells 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 an herb goes, and action explains 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 it does. An expectorant clears mucus, while a carminative calms the gut.

Taste ties it all together. Pungent, aromatic herbs often stimulate or soothe, while bitters promote digestion & detox. Tasting herbs isn’t just about identifying flavors—it’s about recognizing how those flavors translate into medicinal effects.

This is a super dynamic 3 part formula that looks very simple, but is incredibly healing for the entire cardiovascular system. 𝐇𝐚𝐰𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐧 is our heart tonic par excellence. Hawthorn strengthens the heart, vasculature, and cools excessive heat and oxidation in the tissues. It cuts fat, lowers cholesterol and triglycerides, and a whole lot more.

𝐘𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐰 stimulates circulation, but specifically through the veins, has a tonic astringent property in the vessels, heals any wounds in the vasculature, assists digestion, and also a whole lot more. But, both Yarrow and Hawthorn are cooling plants. The addition of 𝐑𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲 helps to warm them up, stimulate circulation through more of a pungent action and help to distribute the other herbs to where they need to go.

I usually prepare this as a tincture.
